Introduction
When you receive a permission to live in Ireland, you may be given the option to renew it after a certain period. Here you will read important information about how to renew your immigration permission online. For more information please read below or watch one of these videos which are available in:
Processing times
Applications for renewal of permission, including when changing stamp category, are accepted up to 12 weeks prior to expiry to allow sufficient time for processing.
ISD are currently processing applications for renewal submitted from week starting 11/03/2024.
If you have submitted an application after this date, it is currently queued and will be processed in due course. Once processed, it may take a further two working weeks to receive the new IRP card.
Employers should note:
If an employee’s IRP card has expired and they are unable to obtain a valid registration card by the expiry date of their current IRP card, they are still legally permitted to remain in the State on the existing conditions of their current IRP card for a maximum of 8 weeks. This 8 week provision is subject to the employee providing proof that they have applied to renew their registration, including when changing stamp category, prior to their current IRP card expiring.
All renewals in the Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow Areas are processed online and applicants are issued with a receipt of application detailing the date of application and a unique application number (OREG number).
If, however, their current permission expired prior to submitting an application for renewal, they are considered out of permission and therefore not currently legally permitted to remain or work in the State. This status may change upon renewal.
Renewing your immigration registration
Depending on your permission, you may be able to renew it. When you receive your IRP card, the expiration date will indicate when it needs to be renewed. For example, you may have permission to study for eight months. If you choose to stay in Ireland beyond that time for further study, you need to request a new permission and renew your registration. It costs €300 to renew some permissions, while others do not require a fee.
If you are required to pay the fee, you can do so with a valid credit or debit card during your renewal application process. If you do not need to pay a fee, you can skip that step when applying.
