Introduction
Following registering for the first time and residing in Ireland for a period of time, you may be eligible to renew your permission to remain and extend your stay in Ireland.
Your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card shows the expiry date of your current permission to remain and indicates the date that it needs to be renewed by. If you wish to stay in Ireland beyond that time, and are eligible, you should apply to renew your permission to remain and receive a new IRP card prior to the date that it expires.
Applications to renew and receive a new IRP card should be submitted online through our online renewals portal. This includes cases where you have recently received or are now eligible for an alternative stamp category (such as moving from a Stamp to 2 study-based permission to a Stamp 1G graduate permission).
Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for answers to common queries about Registration and renewing an IRP.
Current Processing Timelines
We are currently processing applications for renewal submitted on 10/10/2025 (Note: some applications submitted prior to this date may still be in the process of being worked on).
If you have submitted an application after this date, it is currently queued and will be processed in due course.
Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) is currently experiencing an extremely large volume of applications to renew an IRP. Given this, there is a current processing time of approximately 8 weeks from applying to completion. In the interest of fairness to all applicants, all applications are being processed strictly in order of the date submitted.
Once processing is completed successfully, it may take up to a further 15 business days to receive the new IRP card by post.
When should I submit a Renewal Application?
You can apply to renew your IRP up to 12 weeks prior to its expiry date.
Applicants are advised to apply in a timely manner to allow enough time to process your application prior to the current expiry date (Note: Stamp 2 applicants (students) must wait until their course starts before they can apply to renew). All permissions to remain will be renewed from your current expiry date; there is no disadvantage or time lost in renewing prior to expiry.
You must currently be present in Ireland to be eligible to renew your permission to remain online. Applications submitted from outside Ireland will not be accepted.
Employment Concerns
If you have any concerns regarding eligibility to work while your renewal is being processed, this notice to employers regarding employees awaiting renewal of their IRP Card may be of assistance.
International Travel (December 2025/January 2026 Update)
If you have any plans for international travel while your application is being processed during the Christmas period, please be aware of our Travel Confirmation Notice. Please follow the directions contained within carefully to facilitate your return to Ireland with your current recently expired IRP. This notice is valid from 8 December 2025 through to 31 January 2026.
As ever, if you are a non-visa required national, you will not require a valid-IRP card or any type of visa to return to Ireland.
Please do not request expedited processing or the issuance of re-entry visas to facilitate travel during this period. Re-entry visa requests will only be considered in emergency extenuating situations where there is a genuine and unforeseen urgent need to exit and re-enter Ireland in emergency conditions.
